CARC WSPR Competition update 19-February-2016

19th February 2016 By Mike Davies

With 10 days to go including today, I though I would start the daily report with some more global statistics.

The size of the WSPR spots file is now a tad under 700MB. It contains 8,255,358 spots by 2596 observers, some of whom are on multiple bands giving rise to 6706 band observers, who are spread as follows:

2200m observbers =  96
630m observbers  =  365
160m observbers  =  369
80m observbers   =  617
60m observbers   =  200
40m observbers   =  1088
30m observbers   =  1074
20m observbers   =  1249
17m observbers   =  341
15m observbers   =  428
12m observbers   =  132
10m observbers   =  517
6m observbers    =  119
4m observbers    =  4
2m observbers    =  77
70cm observbers  =  19
23cm observbers  =  11

There are 593 observations (individual reporst) that I have not been able to allocate to a band, and so have excluded from any analysis (or your scores).

Countries that heard us are
Argentina, Asiatic Russia, Australia, Austria, Balearic Is., Belarus, Belgium, Bermuda, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Canary Is., Czech Republic, Denmark, England, Estonia, European Russia, Falkland Is., Federal Republic of Germany, Finland, France, French Guiana, Gibraltar, Greece, Greenland, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Kaliningrad, Kazakhstan, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, New Zealand, Northern Ireland, Norway, Poland, Puerto Rico, Reunion I., Romania, Scotland, Serbia, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, Turkey, Ukraine, United States of America, Uruguay, Venezuela, Wales,

Number of observers that heard us = 1167
Total countries worked 60

Finally, I remain concerned at the discrepancy between my previous total country count and the current one, so I am looking for someone to check the allocation of callsign to country in the observers file.

I am also concerned that we need to go through the 172 US callsigns and make sure that are in the correct zone. If I get a minute, I will write some code to use large Maidenhead squares (IO, JO, IN etc) in place of CQWW zones and see if that changes anything. I can automate the process of using Maidenhead squares, and apart from making things easier, it will remove human error at least determination of which zone a callsign is in.
